Datación de recesiones en Ecuador: un enfoque integrado (Turning Points, Markov Switching y State-Space)

Resumen

Este estudio construye una cronología cuantitativa de los períodos de recesión en Ecuador para el período 2000-2024 mediante un marco metodológico integrado. A diferencia de los enfoques institucionales basados en evaluación cualitativa, se combinan tres métodos complementarios: el algoritmo de Bry-Boschan para la identificación de puntos de giro (turning points), modelos de cambio de régimen de Markov (Markov--switching) para la estimación probabilística de fases expansivas y contractivas, y modelos de espacio de estados (state-space) para la extracción del componente cíclico mediante el filtro de Kalman. El aporte central radica en la implementación de una regla formal de consenso basada en la intersección de señales recesivas entre los métodos aplicados sobre 10 variables líderes, junto con métricas de robustez como porcentaje de acuerdo, índice de Jaccard, lead-lag y duración media, que permiten evaluar la sincronización entre enfoques. Los resultados identifican siete episodios recesivos, con alta convergencia metodológica en los eventos asociados a choques externos significativos, como la crisis financiera internacional y la pandemia de COVID-19. En conjunto, la propuesta reduce la discrecionalidad en la datación del ciclo económico y ofrece una herramienta replicable para caracterizar, de manera ex post, episodios recesivos y de debilidad cíclica en economías emergentes y dolarizadas.
