Abstract

This study measures total factor productivity growth of the agricultural sector and its sub-sectors for the countries of the Andean region for 1971 -2000, using a directional Malmquist index. The results show that most of the countries show stagnation in productivity growth between 1970 and the mid 1980”s. However, during the 1990”s, most of the countries show large productivity gains. Of these, the most dynamic sector has been the livestock sector, especially pig and poultry production.
