Abstract

Two issues theoretical are considering for the American and Canadian economies. To the neoclassical economists savings are a necessary prerequisite to the financing of investment. a fall in the saving rate would be the ominous sign of an inevitable slowdown in the rate of accumulation and thereby the pace of economic growth. For Keynesian, on the contrary a fall in the saving rate would not only sustain directly overall economic growth through increased consumer spending but also indirectly through increased investment spending via the usual accelerator effects.
